When I opened a retail store four years ago, I was looking for something to help me edit little videos we’d post to YouTube that were anything from new stock updates to event coverage to brand introductions.

I’ve had a lot of experience with other consumer-level apps and all were either far too limiting or extremely unstable. At the other end of the spectrum, real pro level apps are very expensive and have a lot of features related to broadcast and video tape that I don’t need and that I suspect almost no one does outside of a TV station.

Sony themselves make one such product in the full-fledged Vegas software that Movie Studio used to be named after. But the interface, basic workflow and even many of the filters and effects in Movie Studio are directly carried over from Vegas. A pro could come into Movie Studio and, unless they were trying to output to tape, wouldn’t feel like they were limited in what they could do and would know exactly where and how to do anything they needed to.

It’s a very powerful application. At the same time, I find it reasonably intuitive. I have not read a manual and only had to consult the help file a few times and still I’ve managed to put together around videos, many of them quite complex, with multiple video and audio tracks, subtitles, graphics and effects.

I’ve created my own store template so that most of the time, I can just drop in the raw video files, chop them up how I need to and be done. It takes no time at all. There are a few carry-overs from Vegas that I do wish they’d have streamlined a bit more for home use.

For example, the color correction tool is powerful for correcting white balance and other color issues but it’s quite hard to use properly if you don’t know what you’re doing. It is basically a professional level color correction tool; there is no simple “auto white balance”. Similarly, it almost seems unpredictable whether you’re going to get “computer” RGB or “studio” RGB on output it depends on the codec you use , which isn’t something most home users are even going to know anything about.

There’s a filter for converting one to the other, but most people are going to end up with overly dark and contrasty videos if they use this program to encode to something like mpeg4, then post to YouTube. It may work differently if you post to YouTube directly from within the app, which is possible but I didn’t like the quality I got from that. My last comment is on this app’s stability. I see a few other reviewers who have had problems, but I have never had Movie Studio crash on me once.

And this is in contrast to almost every other consumer-level editing app I’ve tried Nero, Corel VideoStudio, etc. Movie Studio is rock solid for me. I’ve had Movie Studio sessions open for days on end with no problems at all.

Sign up for the trial and see if it works for you. That’s how I knew to buy it; I tried it for 30 days and it never crashed in that time, and that was good enough for me. If you’re looking for a zero learning curve, wizard driven, one button interface to spruce up and post family smartphone videos, this is probably NOT your best choice.

If you’re a pro, you’ve already chosen your toolset long ago I’m sure and it cost far more than this suite does.

To me, this is more geared for the video hobbyist or technically minded consumer looking to do some real video editing and willing to learn some basic editing techniques and workflows. Super powerful video editing suite with NewBlue plugins and my favorite audio editor for chump change.

This is a great program and hopefully you got it for a great value as well. I was a little worried about the NewBlue plugin working because of some previous reviews, but perhaps they got it all worked out because my install went flawlessly for all components of the download. Rendering speed is increased greatly over my last version Vegas 9.

There seem to be quite a few great video editors out there, so I can’t say why exactly I choose Movie Studio over other products like Adobe Premier Elements, but it is an excellent product at any rate. I think this is a matter of personal preference as much as it is the software design, so some may find other products easier to use while I’m sure others will find Movie Studio to be the best in that regard.

It has pretty much all of the features that you would expect for a product at this price level, enough to do personal videos up to moderately advanced videos, but certainly not a professional product by any stretch.

For the hobbyist, it’s plenty. In my opinion, this is a product that delivers the maximum amount of capability for the money and really does not seem to have any significant flaw. It’s extremely stable and predictable. I have yet to have a single crash in this version, nor have I experienced anything odd in the previous version I owned I had version 10 previously. I would recommend demoing this and other competing products and buying whichever feels the most intuitive. I upgraded from version 11 to 12 to improve the rendering speed.

Version 12 is a bit application and also includes the ability to use the GPU graphics card to render. I’ve not been disappointed. Rendering time for a sample video went from 33 minutes with version 11 to 13 minutes using version 12, once I found the place to turn GPU rendering on.

On the render dialog, select Customize Template, see the drop down box near the bottom of the Video tab. My Radeon graphics card uses the OpenCL setting. I haven’t noticed any problems and my version 11 files have been opened with no problems.

Version 12 also includes a preferences file for my Shuttle Express controller. The sound effects shipped with version 12 appear to be the same as those from version Most of the music is also the same, but there are a few new tracks. Prospective new users need to realize that while this is “consumer” level software, it is quite high-end and does have a fairly steep learning curve.
